Quiescence is defined as being inactive, dormant or still.
Being still isn’t easy. It is something excruciatingly painful for some. Our social conditioning compels us to be up and doing. We feel guilty if we aren’t horrendously busy every minute of the day. Our busyness is our justification for taking up space on earth and gobbling up its resources. Unless we can show that we are about to burst and get ripped into smithereens, we feel slothful and indolent.
And here I am, talking about the merits of Quiescence!
You are sold on the concept of dynamism, of constant movement. You are a do-er; you DO. You pursue studies; you chase goal; you run after your dreams. You race to the top of the ladder; you hunt for hidden treasures; you dash after opportunities and you hurtle through your professional life like a rising meteor.
Our vocabulary is filled with subtle (and overt) messages impelling, cajoling and pushing you to activity. You must always be moving. One goal after another, one dream after another… on and on…. AND ON! Ceaselessly mobile, constantly in flux, never still. Never, never still.
Yet it is in this loneliness that the deepest activities begin. It is here that you discover act without motion, labor that is profound repose, vision in obscurity, and, beyond all desire, a fulfillment whose limits extend to infinity.
~ Thomas Merton
You never give life a chance to bring you her gifts. You have been sold the idea- If It Is To Be, It Is Up To Me. That idea is sound enough normally. But it isn’t all there is. Every success you’ve ever enjoyed in your life, every blessing, all the good things you’ve ever had, haven’t all been because you were running towards them. Some of them were brought to you without any effort on your part. Some of them came to you, walking on their own feet as it were, when you weren’t even looking in their direction. And some came to you when you couldn’t even imagine that such things existed in the universe. So you see, it was not all YOUR doing, was it?
Be still. Stillness reveals the secrets of eternity.
~ Lao Tzu
If you keep rushing about hither and thither, how will some of these blessings find you? You might run right past them. You might not even hear them calling your name because you are too intent on getting from point A to point B. You are so busy making ends meet that you don’t have time to lift your head from the grindstone and see the riches lying all around you.
To act wisely when the time for action comes, to wait patiently when it is time for repose, put man in accord with the tides. Ignorance of this law results in periods of unreasoning enthusiasm on the one hand, and depression on the other.
~ Helena Petrova Blavatsky
Your running around wont get the crop ready for harvest ahead of time. You can run about and sow your seed in time, you can rush and water your fields. But there must come a time when you must sit still and wait for the universe to work its magic and get your crop ready to reap. Patience is an art; as is hope.
Quiescence gives you the time to be grateful to universe.
Being still does not mean don’t move. It means move in peace.
~ E’yen A. Gardner
So true Dagny…sadly we don’t reflect of this very much. Our mind is constantly in action, thinking about one thing or the other. Being still needs immense concentration and practice.
It needs consistent practice Janaki. But then you only need to do it once in your life! 🙂
Thought seconded. Although I am not sure I can be still for long, but I do long for stillness.
Thanks Parichita! 🙂
To repose in tranquility, gives us new introspection!!! But to stay still alone without self pity and gloomy feeling will not be that easy. It does take constant effort to understand the rhythm of calmness allover. You always bang on to the point pinning the nail right inside the heart. IS THAT YOUR FINGERS WHICH TYPE OR ANY MAGICAL WAND???
Lol…! I don’t have a magic wand Vaish! You know that. Thanks though! Your comment made me grin.:)
Nothing cam running or walking on its feet to me. I had to shed my blood and sweat for what ever I did (getting disctinctions etc ofcourse were easy but toughest part was what I HAD TO DO AFTER THAT ) 🙂 but I enjoyed every bit of it
THanks for inspiring us as always Dagny ! Your words just hit me like that big wave and wash me from tip to toe 🙂
Thanks for being inspired Afshan! It feels good! 🙂
it is came not cam.
pls ignore the typos or grammatic blunders as U know we all r going mad with the challenge 🙂
Typos ignored Afshan. Relax beautiful! 🙂
Dagny, I can’t tell you how much I needed this post and I think, this is one blessing that came my way as I sat still for my internet to resume & started reading this page which I had already opened to read 🙂 The first half of the post is just so true. I have to come to terms with not only my sitting still but also that of others. I seem to run around and lose myself. It is as if I am scared to sit still. You are right, I am sold on the concept of dynamism. Or is it ingrained in us since childhood? Especially women? Is that something we can overcome Dagny? I am going to try. Thanks for this post. Here is a hug for you.
It IS ingrained in us… specially in women. We have to justify our existence a lot more frequently than men do.
Hugs back to you! 😀 <3
Yes Dagny. We are too busy running and doing things. As you rightly said running around won’t get the crop ready in advance for harvest. I love the joy of life but I also like the nothingness…I wish I had more time to just be..not do anything…not have a checklist in mind. Still every morning for few minutes I have my space…my time…the time when I just sit and be nothing.
You are lucky as well as wise to have created that time to sit and do nothing. Very few of us a comfortable with emptiness. Thanks Sfurti! 🙂
The only time I see quiescence in my sons is when they have a book in their hands. .and that, to me, is very gratifying! !
What about your own Quiescence Roshini? 😀
Being still is an art and I think we all need to learn it. Most of the answers come when the mind is still !
Right you are Ruchira! Thanks! 🙂
To still the chattering monkey mind is certainly an uphill task. And the more we try to calm it, the more the chatter becomes. And from my own experience, once the calmness does make an appearance, it is one memorable experience and leaves one aspiring for more. Very good post as usual Dagny.
Thanks a lot Prathima. As you said, the effort to silence the ‘chattering monkeys’ is more than worth it. 🙂
You know I needed that…I’m currently on leave but I feel so bad every moment this makes me cranky and angry…
R for Ready-Random Thoughts Naba
Here’s a BIG hug for you then Naba. You surely need it! <3
Absolutely superb piece, Dagny. Very relevant to me. Thank you!
Thanks Achyut! 🙂
