What’s the use of a fine house if you haven’t got a tolerable planet to put it on?
~ Henry David Thoreau
Mycologist Paul Stamets lists 6 ways the mycelium fungus can help save the universe: cleaning polluted soil, making insecticides, treating smallpox and even flu.
He seeks to rescue the study of mushrooms from forest gourmets and psychedelic warlords. The focus of Stamets’ research is the Northwest’s native fungal genome, mycelium, but along the way he has filed 22 patents for mushroom-related technologies, including pesticidal fungi that trick insects into eating them, and mushrooms that can break down the neurotoxins used in nerve gas.
There are cosmic implications as well. Stamets believes we could terraform other worlds in our galaxy by sowing a mix of fungal spores and other seeds to create an ecological footprint on a new planet.
The part where he shows how he used mycelium to control- and eradicate- ants in his house is sheer genius.
There is hope for the world yet.

Mushrooms Will Save The Earth?
Who would have thought, eh? Lovely share, Dags. Saving the earth is quite the challenge and we all need to do our part.
Particularly love is ‘Uh-Oh!’ joke.
Yeah, who would have thought! I loved the part where he talks of turning a pile of petro-waste into a thriving ecosystem. This video was particularly interesting for me because I have been a mushroom farmer myself. 😀
